Resetting

Eileen recording 1The three and a half days spent recording my memoir for Penguin Group’s books-on-tape have given me a lot of food for thought. I expected I would get emotional at parts that had been hard to write. When packing to drive to New York I decided to choose jewelry that would give me strength to be able to read them. An image came to me of diamonds. They are hard, multi-faceted, and brightly shining. I have two small studs for my ears and one slightly larger one for a pendant. I put them on and drove south. I had never recorded my reading voice before. I had a surprise and an epiphany. Continue reading

Permission – A Poem

A few months ago I participated in a meditation retreat. After a long period of silence we were allowed to share whatever was on our mind. I wrote this poem from a place of inspiration after listening to a woman I had only just begun to get to know. Sometimes the most important lessons can come from a brief encounter. Continue reading

I Dream of a Vortex As My Screen Saver

iStock_000015059380XSmall - VortexI love remembering my dreams. There may be weeks when I don’t recall a single dream and then one surfaces that’s better than the best sci-fi movie.

The other night I had a dream about my mind as a screen saver. The picture had changed from a natural landscape with grass and wildflowers to a simple gray backdrop with a vortex spiraling from top to bottom. The image flashed by just as I woke up. My first thought was, “I’m going deeper.” My second thought was, “Why is it gray?” I don’t like gray, and a vortex seems so out of character to me. But that’s the gift of dreams; they invite you to go deeper into unexplored nooks and crannies of your soul. Continue reading

Things That G0 SPARK in the Night

iStock_000003506509XSmallIt’s almost the 4th of July, and I woke up this morning wondering how many things from nature give sparks of light at night. This June in Vermont we have had frequent thunder and lightning storms. I sit on my window seat at night and marvel at the vertical and horizontal bolts as I watch the lightning unzip and zigzag through the sky.

In between the storms, when the air is humid and the wind is napping, I look for fireflies at night. Also known as lightning bugs, they are actually beetles, members of the family, Lampyridae.  Their lights are a means of attracting mates, or warning off predators.  An imature form of firefly is the glow worm. This invertebrate lives in woodlands and caves around the world and can even be found inside the Arctic Circle. It uses its bio-luminescence just as fireflies do, to attract mates. We humans have created headlamps to light our way at night, but as far as I know, none of them have been successful in attracting a mate! Continue reading

Turtles as a Metaphor for Home

IMG_3871 - TurtlesSeveral years ago, while I was writing my memoir, I visited a friend in Carmel, California, and bought a green jade turtle with a baby on its back. I was captivated by it, and thought I should give it to my editor as a thank you for all her help. But when I got close to wrapping up the present, I realized I just couldn’t let it go. I showed it to her and told her how I’d felt a connection to it. Perhaps I would give it to her when my book was finished. Luckily she understood.

The day came and still the little turtle was sitting in front of my computer. Something about its expression, of passive contentment, carrying the little one on top, felt like a totem for the kind of care I would need to give myself when taking my stories out into the world Continue reading

About My Blog

Welcome to my blog! I will use it to talk about what helps us become ourselves. I’ll share stories and experiences, poems and musings, as a way of connecting with you and building a supportive community for all of us. It’s important to me that we share our thoughts from “I” statements. This means that instead of saying something like “you don’t know what you’re talking about,” I take responsibility for my feelings and say, “I don’t agree,” or “I don’t understand what you mean.” My hope is that our exchanges will lead to new understandings, revelations, or simply the comfort of knowing we are not alone. The conversations might give us ideas of how to help ourselves, our families, friendships, and other close relationships to heal and become whole. Most of all, I hope they help you connect to your authentic self. Finding ourselves heals family. And healthy families create healthy society.
